List of what you will need:
  1. ¾ - 1 metre of each:
    • Cotton muslin or an old sheet
    • Cotton drill
    • Heavy canvas
    • 100% pure wool outer fabric
  2. 2 metres ridgeline boning
  3. 3-4 pairs of coated steel bones (to be measured from the pattern)
  4. Tailors chalk or soft pencil
  5. Sharp, long bladed scissors
  6. Sharp dress making pins (the long ones with the round heads are best)

If you come to an open day, the drill, heavy canvas, ridgeline and steel bones will be available there for you to buy.

Either using a piece of string or a torn length of material about an inch wide from the cotton muslin, tie a "belt" very tightly (so you can just still breathe) at your natural waistline.

Your natural waistline is higher than you think! When tying the belt, bend your body at the waist from side to side keeping your hips still! This will settle the belt into the right place.

Take the rest of the muslin, tear (so as to give you a straight edge) it lengthways in half so that you have two equal pieces.

Align the torn edge along the centre line of the body, both front and back. Make sure there is plenty on material both at the shoulder to overlap and at the bottom below the waistline.

Anchor the material with pins to the belt, bra and along the top of the shoulder. BE VERY CAREFUL not to pin the fabric to the person's shirt!
